The Railway Detective by Edward Marston
Set in 1850s London. A train carrying gold bullion and mail from London to Birmingham is robbed. A novel crime for the times. The clinical efficiency with which the crime is executed suggests the use inside information. Further, the train is intentionally derailed after the goods are taken. The robbery is promptly followed by two murders and several cases of blackmail using the stolen letters. Despite the seriousness and violence used in the robbery, it is just the beginning of a series of revenge attacks against the railways as a criminal mastermind attempts to avenge his wife’s death, a death he personally blames on the railways.
Overall an enjoyable book, with a straightforward, linearly developed plot and generic romantic subplot. This is the first in a series by Edward Marston set in Victorian England involving the “Railway Detective” Robert Colbeck. |
